Education – Schwerin – Discussion about the use of student teachers in schools – Education

Schwerin (dpa / mv) – In the discussion about catching up on teaching material after the winter holidays, the Left in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has spoken out against the use of student teachers in schools. “With all understanding that ways have to be found how missed lessons can be made up, the use of student teachers without close pedagogical support is a very bad way,” said the parliamentary group leader in the Schwerin state parliament, Simone Oldenburg, on Monday.

In view of the tense staff situation and the multiple workload for teachers in the pandemic, close educational support is hardly feasible. The teachers ‘union VBE and the State Parents’ Council are among those who support the use of student teachers in schools. Your goal: work in small study groups in order to close gaps individually.

The chairman of the State Parents’ Council, Kay Czerwinski, told the German Prese Agency on Monday that he thought it would be a good idea to offer student teachers to support teachers in schools on the basis of a sideline. So far, he has not heard of any concept in MV as to how the learning goals are to be achieved.

Student teachers are in training and should not serve as stopgaps, said Oldenburg. There is a risk of being overwhelmed. “As a result of this negative experience, it is possible that even more people drop out of their teaching degree than far too many are already doing.” This does not help the students.

The face-to-face classes have been largely suspended in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since mid-December. From February 24th, the younger ones up to grade six should return to the schools.
