On Friday February 19, 2021, at the school for the deaf in Yopougon, the Society without barrier of Côte d’Ivoire (SWB-CI), organized an awareness day on the rights of people with disabilities to inclusive education in communities in Côte d’Ivoire.
This day was an opportunity for Sanogo Yéda Adama, executive director of the NGO and head of the inclusive education project in Côte d’Ivoire to give a conference to show the place of the disabled in the Ivorian education system and to lodge complaints with government and goodwill to help people living with disabilities especially at the educational level. Sanogo, himself deaf, said: “a study by the Ministry of National Education, Technical Education and Vocational Training carried out in 2017 reveals that at least 48,000 children with disabilities are of school age but, unfortunately cannot enjoy their right to education, because the main problems are prejudices, stereotypes and lack of correct information about people with disabilities. Deaf and blind children enrolled in ordinary schools have shown that they are no less intelligent than others ”. He also deplored the lack of a sign teacher at the Ministry of National Education. He therefore asked for the introduction of sign language in Cafop. “With the financial support of the European Union and the CBM to the tune of 866,000 euros, several positive results have been observed. Côte d’Ivoire has gone from 02 specialized schools in Abidjan to 30 specialized schools including 07 for blind children in 10 cities. It now has an educational response for the education of children with disabilities.
Nara Marc Olivier, manager of grants at the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) international and representative of the European Union welcomed this ceremony and said: “the school breaks poverty, which is a major cause of prejudices of disabled in the world ”. Note that the end of the contract with the EU and the CBM is for May 31, 2021.
