RADARSOLO.COM – The Community Service Team from the National College of Health Sciences (STIKES) Applied Undergraduate Study Program held education about the risk of complications in diabetics in Langenharjo Village, Grogol District, Sukoharjo Regency, Saturday (8/7/2023). In this activity, several materials related to the risk of complications in people with diabetes mellitus were delivered.
The first material about the risk of infectious diseases in people with diabetes mellitus delivered by Tasrif Ahmad, M.Sc. Then the second material about the risk of candidiasis in people with diabetes mellitus delivered by M. Taufiq Qurrohman, M.Sc. While the last material about the risk of heart disease in people with diabetes mellitus was delivered by Hari Saktiningsih, M.Pd.
Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder that lasts for several years due to the pancreas not being able to produce enough insulin or being unable to use the insulin that has been produced effectively. Insulin is a hormone that has a function to regulate blood sugar balance in the body.
There are several types of diabetes, the first being type 1 diabetes. This type of diabetes is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack and damage the cells that produce the hormone insulin so that the body lacks insulin.
For this type of diabetes type 1 often occurs in patients under the age of 40 years, especially in adolescence. Symptoms of this disease are detected more quickly at a younger age, especially during childhood or adolescence.
The next type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes the body still produces insulin but it is insufficient or insulin intolerance occurs, this type is the most common. The incidence rate reaches 90-95% of all cases of diabetes in the world. Being overweight is the main cause of diabetes, but not all patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are overweight.
Common symptoms of diabetes include frequent hunger, frequent thirst, and frequent urination and lack of energy. There are also some additional symptoms of diabetes such as nausea or vomiting, frequent vaginal infections, yeast infections or thrush, dry mouth, difficult to heal wounds, itching of the skin, especially in the groin or vaginal area.
Diabetic sufferers need to watch out for several infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV. Tuberculosis is a disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis. This disease is transmitted by droplet or splash, person to person. Most tuberculosis attacks the lungs where the germs can colonize the bronchioles or alveoli (lungs). Can also enter the body through the digestive tract, or through a wound in the skin (skin TB).
While HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. HIV is transmitted through blood, semen or vaginal fluids and sharing needles. Transmission from mother to baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding can also occur. People with HIV will appear healthy until HIV becomes AIDS within 5-10 years.
Diabetes mellitus is a disease that cannot be cured. But that does not mean the sufferer feels hopeless. Diabetes or diabetes can still be overcome and controlled. One of them, by taking diabetes mellitus medication. Diabetics can change their lifestyle to be healthier, such as regular exercise and following a special diet.
Diabetics can eat foods made from whole grains or complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, baked potatoes, oatmeal, whole grain breads and cereals. Then the lean meats are steamed, boiled, grilled, and grilled. Vegetables processed by boiling, steaming, roasting or consuming raw. Vegetables are good for consumption for sufferers, such as broccoli and spinach.

In this activity the Community Service Team from the NATIONAL STIKES Applied Undergraduate Study Program was also given a demonstration of making vegetable salad for diabetics. Vegetable salad is considered to be able to help control blood sugar in diabetics because it has a low glycemic index.
