In the search for school principals in Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Education is working on improvements.
In a pilot project, school administration assistants are provided to rectors and directors. “We want to evaluate this pilot project and check whether we can take further steps here,” said Minister Theresa Schopper (Greens) of the “Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung” in Heidelberg. The post of rector is currently vacant at 276 of around 4,500 schools.
“The number of vacant school management positions is unsatisfactorily high,” Schopper told the newspaper. “Principals are the key figures for schools and they are extremely important for the good development of the school.” However, she does not want to shake the basic line of appointing teachers to headmasters. A school administration needs leadership and management qualities, but must always look at things from a pedagogical perspective. “But if I’ve never taught before, then I don’t know what measures could help to improve the pedagogical quality.”
