The As-Siddieq schools in Amsterdam will receive less money from The Hague for the time being. A spokesperson for Minister Mariëlle Paul (education) confirmed this after reporting in Het Parool, which has a letter from the minister to the school board in its possession. According to the newspaper, more than half of the money the school normally receives is being withheld.
Three primary schools fall under the umbrella of As-Siddieq: Al Yaqoet in North, Al Maes in West and Al Jawhara in East.
’40 percent’
The minister’s spokesperson cannot say exactly what the punishment entails. According to Het Parool, the schools will only receive 40 percent of the budget they normally receive until February. That amount would halve if there is no improvement after two months and disappear completely if nothing has happened by June 1.
The school board has been under the ministry’s magnifying glass since 2021. According to the education inspectorate, there is, among other things, financial mismanagement and the current board is doing too little to maintain the quality of education. More than two years later, the situation has hardly improved, the inspectorate concludes in the latest report.
‘Heavy medium’
The ministry informs AT5 that it cannot yet comment on the contents of the minister’s letter. “That is something between us and the board,” says a spokesperson. “Also because they still have the opportunity to respond to this decision.”
The spokesperson does call the sanction a ‘heavy tool that is not used lightly’: “We never rush into this. It is in the greatest interest of the children and all employees at these schools that things are put in order and that the peace is now returning. The board must now put all their energy into this.”
