In an e-mail to all rectors of high schools and other affected schools, School Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) apologized for the glitch with the download of the central Abitur tasks. The exams scheduled for last Wednesday were postponed at short notice on Tuesday evening.
Feller’s email of April 26 says: “I very much regret that we were ultimately unable to avoid a postponement and I expressly apologize for the fact that we were not able to consistently meet the time windows we set in our communication.” The ministry initially stalled the schools in several messages and then announced a final decision for 7:30 p.m. – the cancellation of the exams ultimately came about an hour later.
Feller admits in her letter to the rectors: “Unfortunately, we could only put you off with our e-mails and ask for patience.” Until late in the evening, everything was done to save the next day’s tests.
“I am very aware of how much you, as teachers, shared your excitement with your students and how tense you were,” the minister said in her letter. Finally, she promises: “We will analyze the events and their causes in detail and take the necessary steps with which such a mistake can be ruled out in the future.”
