The question of the failure to replace absent teachers, from school to high school, is raised again by many parents and students in Toulouse and Haute-Garonne who denounce the school chaos.
If the return to school in Haute-Garonne has been described as “peaceful” by the rectorate of Toulouse, since then alarming situations have persisted in some schools, boarding schools and high schools where the failure to replace absent teachers penalizes learning and therefore students.
Many schools are affected by this recurring phenomenon and with winter and sick leave approaching, they fear they will run out of substitute teachers. In some cases, following the program is hell.
Emma, 15, a second year student at the Raymond Naves high school in Toulouse, says she “hasn’t had a maths teacher since the beginning of the school year”.
“We take online courses”

“30 to 50 unreplaced lessons per day”
In the schools of the department “there are between 30 and 50 classes a day that are not replaced, it is an unprecedented situation”, notes the co-secretary of Snuipp-FSU 31 (1st grade) Alexia Seguin. And to continue: “It is all new as it is the first time that we have been recruiting in the complementary ranking of the school chair competition since the beginning of the school year. As for the 220 contractors hired in Haute-Garonne, it will not be possible to go further because the academy, which has already requested authorization from the ministry to hire other contractors, has reached its ceiling. »
“We are very worried”
The question of replacing teachers absent for various reasons risks becoming significant with the winter. For Pierre Prioret, academic secretary of Snes-FSU (second degree), “we are entering a critical period. It will be difficult to replace absent colleagues, especially since the rectorate has almost exhausted the stock of contract workers hired at the beginning of the school year. We hit the 1,350 hires figure, which is typically a year-end look, ie. This represents the equivalent of a three-year delay in the competition. We are very concerned about the replacement issue this winter, that’s clear.”

In Frouzins, southwest of Toulouse, the parents of the students of the Pierre and Marie Curie school group are desperate for the “lack of responses from the Toulouse academy”. Every day, due to the lack of a designated teacher in the school, the 26 children in a mixed middle and large kindergarten class are distributed to other classes, which complicates the work of teachers who see their numbers explode. “Since the beginning of the school year, the teacher who was in charge had two weeks before falling ill, explains Floriane, mother of two students. She is a great teacher who has only been replaced for a day since. We called the rectorate several times to warn us of the situation, but everyone dumped the hot potato. The teaching team is doing their best to accommodate the kids, but the teachers are at their limit. With parents, we are outraged.
