Rieka Pfitzner from the Gymnasium im Schloss in Wolfenbüttel achieved the best results in her Abitur, the Ministry of Education announced. With 895 out of 900 possible points, she achieved an average of 1.0. She is now doing a voluntary ecological year and is considering studying to become a teacher. “I want to use the year to look around a bit,” said the former student.

More than 1,800 fail their Abitur

The top group also includes Clara Sophie Brosig from the Adolfinum Gymnasium in Bückeburg (Schaumburg district), Nora Borowski from the Gymnasium in Bleckede (Lüneburg district) and Janneke Lobeck from the Neues Gymnasium in Wilhelmshaven with a score of 894 each.

Two of them will be studying medicine starting in October. In addition to a certificate of award, the young women received educational vouchers: 500 euros for the best, 250 euros each for the others.

A total of 28,795 students in Lower Saxony passed their Abitur exams this year. Of these, one in 50 students achieved a final grade of 1.0.

The overall grade point average of 2.45 was only slightly worse than in the previous school year (2.43). This means that the average was better than in the pre-Corona year of 2019 with 2.59. Six percent of all candidates (1,841) did not pass the Abitur.
