Education | La Caixa and the Murcia City Council renew their alliance to work to overcome child poverty

The deputy director general of the La Caixa Banking Foundation, Marc Simón, and the mayor of the Murcia City Council, José Antonio Serrano, signed an agreement online this Thursday to continue promoting the program CaixaProinfancia in Murcia with the aim of continuing to work for the overcoming child poverty.

CaixaProinfancia has the collaboration of 426 social entities that work in a network and are in charge of directly assisting families, prioritize aid and monitor each case. In the city of Murcia, the program has 10 collaborating entities coordinated by Fundación Cepaim, Cáritas and Fundación Secretariado Gitano. All these organizations act with the premise that the children of today are the adults who will form the society of tomorrow, so that care for children is decisive to achieve their well-being, but also to build a more just and equitable society and cohesive.

From its inception in 2007 until the end of 2020, they accompanied 16,343 minors and 8,783 families in Murcia, with a total investment of 40,980,746 euros. The project also promotes a coordinated action with other agents of the territory (municipalities, schools and health centers, among others) to provide a global and comprehensive response to the needs of children and their families. In the case of the Murcia City Council, it is worth highlighting the collaboration of the Childhood and Adolescence Area, as well as the Municipal Social Services Centers (Murcia Sur, Murcia Norte and Ciudad de Murcia), as fundamental agents to develop the Program in the territory.

The La Caixa Foundation and the Murcia City Council jointly identify and analyze existing situations of poverty and vulnerability. These realities require going beyond the attention to specific needs and making global action approaches that help transform the situation of minors and their families. In this line, a joint service proposal will be defined that brings together public and private resources as well as innovative social projects in the territory. The objective for this 2020-2021 academic year is to be able to serve some 1,651 families.

CaixaProinfancia works to break the transmission line of poverty from parents to children and promote equal opportunities. The program targets the children living in poverty and social vulnerability, in order to promote and accompany its development in a comprehensive manner, favoring policies to improve equity and social cohesion. This is specified in the development of five lines of work: educational reinforcement, non-formal education and free time, family educational support, psychosocial care and therapy, and health promotion.
