Education in Polish Prisons: Breaking the Cycle of Crime

Most inmates who received degrees in Polish prisons never returned to crime. This was confirmed by Father Kalinowski, rector of the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin. For more than 10 years he taught in prison.

(Vatican News Network) The Catholic University of John Paul II in Lublin, Poland, has been offering educational courses for prisoners for more than 10 years. This initiative targets not only Lublin prison inmates, but also those in other prisons in Poland.

Fr. Mirosław Kalinowski, rector of the Catholic University of Lublin, explained the university’s goals for the initiative, saying that it is for prisoners to receive higher education and absorb important ethical and human values. In fact, learning has been shown to lead to greater intellectual development, better fulfillment of job aspirations, return to normal life, increased self-esteem, and restoration of social relationships among inmates.

Currently, university curricula fall under the umbrella of family science, which includes specialized areas such as helping those who cannot support themselves and promoting socio-environmental education. In addition, the plan to provide educational courses for inmates has also been highly praised by the prison department, leadership, and staff.

The project was successful because the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin took care of the academic process and the prison department took care of the security of the process. Father Kalinowski, the rector of the university, concluded that “studying increases the self-esteem of prisoners, makes them feel fully a part of society, and deepens their knowledge and skills so that they can use them after release from prison. Since 2013, dozens of inmates have completed their studies at the Catholic University of Lublin, and more than 80% of the graduates have not re-entered the criminal path after being released from prison.”
