Education in Danger: Unitary Strike on February 1 – Salaries, Positions, Working Conditions, Reforms

Salaries, positions, working conditions, reforms: education in danger

Unitary strike on February 1

For our salaries, against job cuts, against the implementation of forced reforms, our union organizations FSU, FNEC FP – FO, CGT Educ’Action, SUD education are calling for strike action and demonstrations on February 1st 2024.

The recruitment crisis in education continues, and all studies show that low salaries are the first obstacle to the attractiveness of education professions. Our organizations are demanding real salary increases, in particular through a significant increase in the index point for all staff in this context of high inflation, as well as the abandonment of the pact. Instead of continuing the dynamic just started with the measures implemented in 2023, the minister now refuses to discuss new general measures that are nevertheless necessary and is even considering a new transformation of careers marked by an increasing weight of hierarchies.

Finally, numerous signs confirm the failure of the Pact. The staff clearly understood that this was not a revaluation. The implementation of the Pact has also deeply divided the teams, especially since it has given rise to pressure or interpretations contrary to the regulatory texts with the sole aim of making numbers and saving the Pact. Furthermore, the minister persists in refusing emergency salary measures which would make it possible to get AESH and AED out of precariousness.

There is still time to renounce job cuts to allow in particular to reduce the number of staff per class but also to ensure replacements. We should also recruit more staff in all multi-professional teams… The deterioration of working conditions and the loss of professional meaning must be taken seriously. The trashed continuing education, inclusion without means, large numbers in classes, etc. : all this contributes to further deteriorating working conditions.

On the issue of inclusion, all the lights are red and teaching and AESH staff are at a breaking point. This is why our organizations demand:

  • The defense of specialized and adapted education, the maintenance and creation of necessary places in social and medico-social establishments.
  • Civil servant status and a real salary for AESH, recruitment of AESH and human resources commensurate with needs.
  • The abandonment of the measures taken within the framework of act 2 of the Inclusive School (employment status of ARE merging the AESH and the AED, establishment of schooling support centers allowing Education to get its hands on MDPH notifications) and the opening of discussions with trade union organizations on the basis of staff demands.

The vocational high school reform project is emblematic of fewer schools, fewer teachers, more companies, more outsourcing of missions, and more management! This reform goes against the grain of educational issues; it involves major upheavals which will also have a heavy impact on the working conditions of all staff working in vocational high schools and on the learning conditions of students.

Our organizations demand its withdrawal! They ask the minister to give up presenting this project and to initiate real consultations within the Ministry of National Education on the basis of a rigorous diagnosis to be shared on the state of vocational education both for students and for the working conditions of staff before any reform.

More generally, the “Shock of knowledge” measures announced by the Minister outline a school project which returns to the objective of democratization and aggravates inequalities. They further move in the direction of increased control of teaching work (single manual, imposed methods, standardized evaluations) against educational freedom.

For all these reasons, the organizations FSU, FNEC FP – FO, CGT Educ’action and Sud education are calling to mobilize through diversified actions now and to prepare a day of strike and demonstrations on February 1st.
