According to the Constitutional Court, the parents’ initiative wants the court to determine the admissibility of their referendum with the lawsuit. It is still unclear when a decision will be made in the proceedings. The court said it is aiming for the proceedings to be as short as possible.
The Interior Ministry rejected the referendum at the end of July. The ministry argued at the time that carrying out such a referendum was not constitutional. This was due, among other things, to the considerable costs that the draft law would incur if it were approved in a referendum. In addition, the costs should have been stated in concrete terms as a monetary amount in the justification for the law.
The parents’ initiative is fighting for a G9 option for all classes. With the referendum, the parents want to ensure that all students at the grammar school will have the opportunity to complete their Abitur in nine school years from the 2025/2026 school year.
In April, the Green-Black coalition agreed on proposals for fundamental reforms. Among other things, G9 is to be introduced in the 2025/2026 school year – but initially only for grades five and six.
