Aargau’s education director Alex Hürzeler wants to relax the wage deductions for experienced but non-qualified teachers. The diploma is important for performance, especially at the beginning of a career, Hürzeler said in an interview.

In the current system, teachers who have been working in the profession for a long time but do not have a diploma appropriate to their level feel unfairly treated, said the head of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport in an interview with the “Aargauer Zeitung” published on Monday.

As soon as they change schools, they will be subject to the same wage deductions as inexperienced teachers without a diploma for five years. “We want to rethink that now,” said Hürzeler. In this case, he wants to relax the rules. For example, anyone who has no teaching diploma at all will have their wages deducted by ten percent for five years.

With experience the salary increases

The aim is still for as many teachers as possible to complete their training. “But anyone who hasn’t done it after five years will probably not do it later either,” said the SVP government councillor. Regardless of their diploma, experienced teachers receive a higher salary than their inexperienced colleagues.

According to the interview, it is not recorded how many teachers in the canton of Aargau teach without the right diploma. It is not yet clear which specific figures would add value, said Hürzeler. In his opinion, there will probably never be statistics on the detailed level of training of teachers.
