Education – Frankfurt am Main – Teachers, parents and students: Lessons in smaller groups – Education

Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) – Teachers, parents and students in Hessen are demanding lessons in smaller groups in view of the increasing number of corona infections. In order to prevent widespread closings, the schools would have to switch to an alternation model between classroom teaching and distance teaching, according to a joint open letter to the state government published on Thursday. The schools had already developed concepts for this in the spring that should be expanded further.

The letter was signed by the state school spokesman, the state parents ‘council, the primary school association and the GEW teachers’ union. The stakeholders are also calling for more staff in schools. For this, 150 million euros should flow from the country’s Corona special fund.

The Hessian Parents Association suggests shortening the curriculum. “Due to the school closings in the months of April to June, many children have significant knowledge gaps that have to be worked on first,” said chairman Klaus Wilmes-Groebel. The Corona hygiene regulations also delayed the daily routine: “Thorough hand washing with 25 elementary school children at one or two washbasins in the classroom takes 20 minutes, 5 to 10 minutes of airing time and again takes time and our children lose it in class.”

“Because it is not a normal school year, there must be no normal half-year reports”, explained Wilmes-Groebel and instead called for individual learning development reports and support plans.
