“Education First wants Giro to be stopped after 2 weeks, UCI refuses” | Giro

The corona virus has also been advancing in the cycling peloton in recent days. On Tuesday, Jumbo-Visma, Mitchelton-Scott and Michael Matthews left the Giro due to positive tests. 17 police officers from the Giro caravan have also been quarantined after corona infections.

Education First is concerned and Eurosport has learned that the American team has written a letter to the organization, the UCI and other stakeholders to definitively end the Giro on the 2nd day of rest.

“There will be more cases of corona as a result of this week’s positive tests. It would be better if the Giro was stopped than if one team after another would withdraw due to positive cases,” the letter read.

EF also proposed to schedule at least 2 more rounds of testing for Monday’s rest day. And if positive cases come to light before the rest day, the team proposes to stop the Giro before the rest day.

But the UCI has rejected EF’s proposal. “We are now faced with the challenge of finishing the season and we can only do that by working together with this mindset and creating a unity,” said UCI boss David Lappartient.
