Education – Erfurt – Ministry is aiming for more than 1000 teacher settings – Education

Erfurt (dpa / th) – The Thuringian Ministry of Education is confident of having hired more than 1000 new teachers at the schools by the end of the year. In the current year, 940 permanent teaching positions had been filled by the end of the first week of November, the Ministry of Education announced on request. Further positions are advertised, at least 78 of them are being finalized and have already been filled with one applicant.

“We have succeeded in taking the necessary new appointments,” said Minister of Education Helmut Holter (left). He rated the balance sheet as a great success – especially in times of the corona pandemic.

“We have always said: Despite and precisely because of the pandemic, new hires must have top priority,” emphasized Holter. The attitudes this year are important for securing lessons.

The chairman of the Thuringian Teachers’ Association, Rolf Busch, spoke of the numbers as a good signal. At the same time, he emphasized that the red-red-green state government as well as the CDU-led predecessor governments had initially massively cut teaching positions before rethinking. “The state government only acted in 2018, which is much too late,” said Busch. He also asked whether the more than 1000 attitudes actually covered all ages of teachers that year.

Thuringia has suffered from an acute teacher shortage for years, which is particularly large in certain rural areas and in certain school subjects such as mathematics and chemistry.

According to the Ministry of Education, the current budget provides for the positions of all teachers who are leaving school to be filled and for 285 more teachers to be recruited. For 2020 this means that theoretically up to 1200 settings are possible.

Busch pointed out that this year more lateral entrants were hired than ever before. As of the end of August, the share of lateral entrants among new hires was almost 16 percent. “The aim must be for these colleagues to be qualified in advance and for them to be put on an equal footing with the other teachers at the end of their training,” said Busch.
