Education: Debate about returning to the G9: How is the country positioning itself?

After the Citizens’ Forum’s recommendation on the future of high schools in Baden-Württemberg, it is eagerly awaited what the Prime Minister will say Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) positioned in the debate about the length of high school. The weekly state press conference (12 p.m.) on Tuesday will primarily focus on how the state government will deal with the Citizens’ Forum’s report and what conclusions it will draw from the recommendations.

On Monday, a citizens’ forum convened by the state government recommended a return to a nine-year high school. According to the report, 49 of the 55 randomly selected citizens were in favor of a “new G9” becoming the norm at high schools in the country. However, according to the forum’s wishes, at least one high school in each district should also offer a G8 train. At the same time, the Citizens’ Forum spoke out in favor of a “holistic, cross-school reform”. Next year, the state parliament will also have to deal with a popular proposal from a parents’ initiative that wants to force a return to the G9.

Currently is in Baden-Württemberg the eight-year standard high school. It was once introduced to make students more internationally competitive. G9 only exists as a model project in 44 state schools and some private schools. A return to the G9 has been discussed and argued for a long time, but the Green-Black coalition agreed in the coalition agreement that they did not want to lead any structural debates.

Kretschmann emphasized on Monday that we will look closely at the recommendations and the report of the citizens’ forum and “deal intensively with the arguments and ideas.”

His coalition partner had already pushed ahead. “We need a holistic update for our education system,” said CDU party and parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel on Monday. The schools in Baden-Württemberg need to be top again. “I advocate that we look at all key areas of education and align them with this vision,” said Hagel. On Tuesday, the leaders of the green-black coalition wanted to discuss how to proceed.
