Education Budget Draft in Bremen Sparks Criticism for Cuts and Spending Decreases

BREMEN. On paper it is almost 80 million euros more than last year, but the bottom line is that there is less money left for education in Bremen. That’s why the draft for Bremen’s education budget is causing criticism.

According to the education department, the Senator for Children and Education’s budget in 2024 is almost 1.3 billion euros. That is 78 million euros more than in 2023, said a spokesman for the education department. However, this does not mean that more money is available per child for education than before, because the number of daycare children and students in the state of Bremen has increased significantly. In addition, many things have become more expensive in recent years.

“Although the total resources available could be increased nominally, in reality fewer financial resources are available,” says the draft budget, which is finally decided by the Bremen Citizenship, as the state parliament in Bremen is called. According to the education department, there will be a cut in further education.

Don’t skimp on education right now

The Education and Science Union (GEW) criticized Bremen for saving money on education. “Especially now, in times when the social climate is becoming harsher and right-wing parties are gaining popularity, under no circumstances should savings be made on education,” said GEW Bremen state spokeswoman Elke Suhr, according to the statement.
Children and young people must be empowered to become defensive democrats. “How should this be implemented if the conditions under which work is carried out in schools continue to deteriorate?” asked GEW state spokeswoman Ramona Seeger. Sticking to the debt brake will lead to more spending in the long term.

The Verdi union criticized the planned cuts in further training. It was said that there was a risk of important further training opportunities being lost. A significant increase in funding for educational institutions is necessary so that employees can be paid appropriately. The union called on citizens to prevent the Senate’s planned cuts in the budget preparation process. It was said that the further training area must be provided with at least 800,000 euros in addition. News4teachers with material from dpa
