Bremen (dpa / lni) – The state of Bremen needs more teachers to teach Ukrainian children and young people. The education department will also ask retired teachers for help, said the spokeswoman for the education department. Their expertise and many years of professional experience could benefit the schools and especially the students in this very challenging situation, she said. The authority also asked all language support teachers if they wanted to increase their teaching hours.
“We already have many pedagogical specialists in Bremen who can speak Ukrainian or Russian and have offered their support. More than 20 Ukrainian teachers have already contacted us,” said the spokeswoman. “We try to integrate them quickly into various projects and into the lessons. But that’s not enough to cover the lessons for all refugee Ukrainian children and young people.” Therefore, former teachers who are retired would also be asked.
According to the department, more than 7,000 refugees had arrived in Bremen and Bremerhaven by the beginning of the Easter holidays. “At that time, the number of school-age children and young people was around 2,000, of whom around a quarter will have arrived at the schools after the Easter holidays.” The primary goal is therefore to offer all children and young people a place at school as quickly as possible.
The authority is planning so-called welcome classes at several central locations. “The courses should enable children and young people to settle in and get to know the German language.” At the same time, the preliminary courses in primary and secondary schools are to be expanded, in which children and young people can learn their first German language skills. The preliminary courses are organized directly at the schools, the participants can also take part in individual regular school subjects.
