Berlin (dpa / bb) – From next Wednesday, all secondary schools in Berlin and vocational schools will require a mask for all students and all school staff. The start of lessons should also be stretched over two hours, so that not all students sit on the trains and buses at the same time in the morning, as the Senate Department for Education announced on Friday. “In the current situation, this is another important step in being able to maintain regular classes under pandemic conditions,” said Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD).
The mask requirement also applies during lessons and on the entire school premises. The schools are responsible for the organizational implementation of the extended start of lessons. According to the education administration, Scheeres took the measure in consultation with Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Michael Müller (SPD).
“Berlin takes into account the finding that the number of infections, especially in the 15 to 19-year-old age group – due to the autumn holidays – has continued to rise,” it said to explain. In the two weeks off, many young people met outside of schools, which increased the number of infections. To implement the measure, the Senate wants to deliver more masks to schools from the middle of next week. In the past week, around half a million mouth and nose covers were made available.
For daycare centers and elementary schools, however, everything remains the same. For the time being, there should still not be a mask requirement. But keep an eye on developments, said a spokesman for the Senate Administration.
