Education – Berlin – Berliner GEW calls for a quick end to regular lessons – education

Berlin (dpa / bb) – The education union GEW has asked the Senate Department for Education to enable the switch between teaching in school and digitally at home. “And preferably immediately,” said the Berlin GEW chairman Tom Erdmann on Friday. In the secondary schools from grade 7 onwards, the groups should change on a daily or weekly basis. From the point of view of the GEW, a combination of teaching and after-school care with correspondingly smaller groups is better at primary schools, but where the children are generally in school.

Next Wednesday the federal and state governments want to agree on possible new measures against the corona pandemic. Stricter rules for schools should also be discussed. “I can’t imagine the group going apart again and saying that every country does what it wants with its schools, and most of them want no restrictions,” said Erdmann.

“Education Senator Sandra Scheeres has to say goodbye to the mantra of regular lessons”, demanded the GEW chairman. This is already no longer possible. “We are experiencing a creeping lockdown in schools anyway,” said Erdmann, referring to the recently significant increase in the number of corona cases among students and teachers. “If the groups are reduced, the number of those in quarantine will also be reduced.”

In Berlin, according to the education administration, around 330,000 pupils are being taught by around 39,900 teachers in public general schools in the current school year. At the public vocational schools there are around 70,000 pupils and 4,100 teachers.
