In mid-June this year, almost 3,000 pupils attended a primary school. 1,450 went to a secondary school, 450 to a comprehensive school. Around 460 pupils were aiming for a high school diploma, and 130 were aiming for a special needs school diploma. Almost 400 pupils attended a vocational school.

According to the Ministry of Education, the same rules and procedures apply to Ukrainian boys and girls at Brandenburg schools as to all newly arrived or foreign-language students. According to a survey in mid-June this year, 58 percent of Ukrainian students were learning German as a second language in remedial courses. 13 percent were learning German in preparatory groups with special support, it was said. 29 percent of boys and girls were taught German as a second language without additional support.

At the end of June, Brandenburg’s state school authorities had hired 313 skilled workers, most of whom had fled from Ukraine. They supported the schools as teachers or as so-called pedagogical staff.
