EDU launches referendum against ESC loans in Basel or Geneva

On August 30, 2024, the SRG will announce which city (Basel or Geneva) will be awarded the contract to host the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in May 2025. The cantonal parliaments are expected to decide in August or September 2024 which state contributions will go to the ESC candidacy of Basel-Stadt or Geneva.

EDU sharply criticizes “propaganda show”

At the delegates’ meeting on August 10, 2024, the EDU Switzerland has now definitively decided to hold the referendum in the canton that is to host the ESC (Basel-Stadt or Geneva). On the recommendation of the management, the delegates approved a five-figure contribution to support the referendum.

The EDU Switzerland raises four main criticisms of the ESC, as the party writes in a press release:

  1. The ESC is organized in accordance with exceptionally high costs which is primarily due to Tax money should be financed.
  2. When it comes to the ESC, double standards are applied in an extreme way: While the ban on everything Christian is enforced with the greatest consistency (example: Salvation Army at the ESC 2013), there are no restrictions on very destructive occult and satanic representations and messages (Example: Bambie Thug).
  3. The massive riots and demonstrations against the Israeli representative Eden Golan as well as the rampant anti-Semitism cast a bad light on the ESC and lead to high security costs and risksThe ESC therefore brings no added value for Switzerland.
  4. The ESC is becoming increasingly politicized and is becoming a Propagandashowe.g. through gender ideology and the issue of non-binarity.

“For these reasons, the EDU Switzerland and its cantonal sections reject the financing of the ESC with taxpayers’ money,” the party announced on August 12, 2024.
