Edsilia Rombley and Iris Hond play shows in empty Concertgebouw | NOW

The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam created the Concertgebouw Sessions, where famous artists perform solo in front of an empty hall. Edsilia Rombley and Iris Hond, among others, are cooperating on the new project that was set up because of the measures relating to the corona virus.

Rombley would make her solo debut at The Concertgebouw on March 19 and can now be seen on April 22.

“Performing in an empty Concert Hall is of course bizarre,” says Rombley. “I hope this will give people at home some distraction in these unpleasant times.”

Pianist Hond will give ten performances in The Concertgebouw in June, where she will play music by Ludovico Einaudi. It is not yet known whether these shows will continue, but Hond will in any case be seen online at the Concertgebouw Sessions on April 15.

The pianist is curious about what it is like to play in an empty hall. “The interaction with my audience is very important to me, but I think it is great that we can still reach people in this way.”

One employee is present at shows

The first edition of the concert series will be kicked off on Wednesday 8 April by pianist Anna Fedorova, who will perform, among other things, music by composer Chopin.

The Concertgebouw Sessions take place every Wednesday at 12:30 PM and can be viewed on the social media channels and the concert hall websites and participating artists. The shows last more than fifteen minutes and there is only one employee of The Concertgebouw present at the recordings and at a considerable distance from the musician.
