Madrid. Edmundo González Urrutia, the Venezuelan opposition leader who has been asylum in Spain since last September 8, urged the “international community” to exert “pressure” on the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Madura, to open a dialogue table to decide the future of the country. The politician and former diplomat participated in a forum in Barcelona, in which he called his country’s regime an “autocracy.”
Since his departure from Venezuela, after an agreement with two prominent government leaders, Delsy Rodríguez, vice president, and her brother Jorge, president of the Assembly, González Urrutia has participated in few public events, although he has held numerous meetings with politicians Spaniards, from the president of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, to the leaders of the right and the extreme right, Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal, respectively, as well as the former Spanish presidents Felipe González, José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy.
González requested “the active solidarity of the world’s democracies. International support is essential. Our cause is just and democratic. Due to planetary interaction, the existence of an autocracy in one country constitutes a problem for all the others.” And he added that “autocratic consolidation in Venezuela is not just a problem for us. The consequences are already being felt in full force both inside and outside our territory.”
In the opinion of the opposition leader, if “international pressure” intensifies, Maduro will be forced “to open an essential dialogue for all parties. “That has been our political proposal and line of action that has had no echo in the regime and has only unleashed a brutal repressive escalation.”
