Double goals from Zach Hyman then saw the Oilers leave the first period leading 4-0.
02:49 into the second period Janmark’s perhaps most delicious assist of the evening then came. In connection with a draw in the Oilers’ zone, the Hurricanes tried a variation that led to a finish from the blue line signed by Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Janmark dove forward and covered the shot, whereupon Warren Foegele got hold of the puck, dribbled past Kotkaniemi and feinted away Antti Raanta on the ensuing free kick.
– It is the right decision regardless of the circumstances to go to cover shots there, explained Janmark. The fact that it was an assist this time is of course a plus, but you always try to play the same way.
– I could probably play this game another 100 times and I wouldn’t walk away with three points in any of them. It’s how you play that counts.
The Oilers’ winning streak couldn’t have come at a better, or more necessary, time. After being parked at the bottom of the league table for a long time, they have now clawed their way up enough to at least have a playoff spot within reach.
The Oilers (10-12-1, 21 points) are six points behind the St. Louis Blues who currently hold the last wild card spot in the Western Conference.
– (The suite) has given us a sporting chance, Janmark said. I mean, if you look at the table… if we hadn’t won these five games we would have been far, far behind. We’re back in contention, but the streak doesn’t mean much more than that.
– Now we have to try to extend it to six games.
The Oilers have the opportunity to do it on the night of Saturday, 03.00 Swedish time (Viaplay), when they host the Minnesota Wild at home in Rogers Place.
