Leon Draisaitl scored his fourth and fifth playoff goals and an assist, and Edmonton leveled the NHL’s first-round playoff series with a 5-4 overtime win over Los Angeles on Sunday. Both teams now have two wins under their belt. It was just the Oilers’ third win in their last 13 finals overtime.
Edmonton got off to a bad start, trailing 3-0 after 20 minutes. Coach Jay Woodcroft then changed tally, bringing in Jack Campbell for Stuart Skinner. A good decision, because the new goalkeeper saved 27 of 28 shots in the episode. The Oilers equalized in the second 20 minutes – also thanks to a brace from Draisaitl. The guests also knew an answer to the Kings’ renewed lead. Evander Kane sent the game into overtime with his 4-4 lead in the 57th minute, which Zach Hyman decided in favor of the Oilers after 10:39 minutes.
There were also away wins in the other three playoff games on Sunday. Carolina beat the New York Islanders 5-2 and only needs one win to progress. Seth Jarvis struck twice for the Hurricanes, who went on to win with two power-play goals ahead. Sebastian Aho scored one goal and set up two goals.
Boston also leads 3-1 in the series against Florida after winning 6-2 in Game 4. Taylor Hall scored twice and also assisted in two other goals for the Bruins. Jake DeBrusk also scored twice for Boston. Goalkeeper Linus Ullmark parried 41 shots before conceding a late penalty and going off the ice after an altercation with Matthew Tkachuk.
Strong goalkeeping was also key in Dallas’ 3-2 win over Minnesota, which saw the Stars level the series 2-2. Jake Oettinger shone in the Texas club’s success with 32 saves. Match winners for Dallas were forward Tyler Seguin with two goals and Roope Hintz with three assists.
