Le death row. Between Djibo and Kongoussi, the murderous showdown is being played out between the terrorists and our armed forces. Too many civilian and military casualties. 31 soldiers and three army auxiliaries were killed in an attack in Namsiguia on 26 June. We mourn them, it’s normal. We pay tribute to them for this ultimate sacrifice, it is a duty. We are irritated by our inability to prevent these tragedies, it is normal. And we are looking for scapegoats. Here, things can go wrong. This is not the first deadly attack and it may not be the last on this scale. It depends on our staffs to make the most judicious choices. We know that it is not always easy with the means available to the combatants, in a front that stretches from west to east and with more and more incursion from the interior of the territory. Beyond the human and material toll, it is important to keep a cool head in order to learn the right lessons from these military defeats. Reducing losses must be part of the FDS strategy. It is a decisive psychological element at this stage of the all-out war that the country is waging. It is not only the morale of the troops, there is that of public opinion and citizens who support this war effort at arm’s length which needs to be maintained.
