Editorial – pediatrics Switzerland

Pediatric dermatology in Switzerland has developed significantly over the past 15 years, both clinically and in the areas of education and research. This progress is the result of the dedicated efforts of the members of the Swiss Group for Pediatric Dermatology, who have understood how to give more recognition to this specialist area at a national and international level.

Today, university clinics, some peripheral hospitals and individual private practices in Switzerland offer special consultations for skin diseases in children, from newborn to adolescence. However, the number of specialists in pediatric dermatology is still not enough to meet the growing demand. It is therefore extremely important to strengthen the training of dermatologists and pediatricians in this specialist area. The training on therapeutic advances and best practices makes it possible to significantly improve the medical care of young patients.

In Switzerland, seminars, conferences and other training courses in pediatric dermatology take place regularly to keep knowledge and practices up to date. In addition, the European Society of Pediatric Dermatology (ESPD) offers monthly specialist lectures, a scientific website with reviews of the current literature, an annual high-level conference and a training program for pediatricians and dermatologists who want to specialization in pediatric dermatology (ESPD). The field of pediatric dermatology is wide and includes both rare and common diseases, in which the clinical picture and the treatment can change depending on the age and the photo of the patient. Skin diseases can have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of young patients and can be linked to systemic diseases. Interdisciplinary collaboration between pediatricians, pediatric dermatologists and other pediatric subspecialists is essential for integrated and coherent care for young patients.

Parents also play a key role in treating their children’s skin diseases. You must be fully engaged in care. Patient therapeutic training, which is an important tool in pediatric dermatology, is also essential. It is intended to enable patients and their families to live better with the disease and to encourage proactive, collaborative participation in treatment.

In this journal, dedicated to pediatric dermatology, we offer you a varied program. In addition to the new Swiss recommendations for the treatment of infantile hemangiomas with beta blockers, we offer you an overview of primary lymphedema in children and the diagnostic challenges in dark-skinned children. We also look at atopic eczema, its comorbidities and new therapeutic era, as well as current and future therapeutic options for epidermolysis bullosa. And finally, we present innovative non-invasive skin imaging technology.

We wish you an inspiring read!
