Ecology invites itself on all floors in this month of July. Yesterday, Brussels hit hard by proposing 12 measures to achieve carbon neutrality as quickly as possible. Among the recommendations is in particular the end of the sale of vehicles with combustion engines in 2035. It seems far away, but it is only in 14 years… which is to say tomorrow. A hell of a challenge for the car manufacturers who hoped, without really believing it, to push back the finish line in 2040. But no, the European Commission has decided to step up: it must be said that with time taken by various deliberations and consultations, we had almost forgotten that one day the time would come to act.
The acts are there and they will be difficult to collect for the automobile, but also for air transport – taxed on kerosene – and polluting companies. With the opening of a second CO2 market, the steel industry, refining, cement factories or the chemical industry will have to get used to paying much more for their “pollution permits”. What to encourage them to look for alternative solutions because, it is necessary to be convinced of it, there will be no turning back.
From Brussels to Paris in fact, the war on greenhouse gases and other pollutants has entered a new phase. Paris is also on track to quickly adopt the “Climate and Resilience” law, inspired by citizen contributions. Admittedly, the text was planed by an always quibbling Senate, but the biggest obstacles are removed. Yes, definitely, ecology is essential on all levels: in the Grand Est also which has obtained, with a great struggle, the possibility of establishing an eco-tax on its highways overloaded with trucks. Good news for Thionville, Metz, France and the continent: green Europe is advancing everywhere.
