Edition Thionville – Hayange | Do you know what is Hayange’s oldest house?

It is at 66 rue Foch (formerly Grand-rue or Langstrasse) that the curious can discover the oldest residence in the city. For more than five centuries, the people of Hayange have walked under its windows without necessarily dwelling on it.

The building is nothing remarkable and its honorable age goes almost unnoticed. Only the ashlar lintel of the front door bears witness to its long history and date of construction in 1501.

A big farm

In the XVIe century, Hayange is a rural borough. The opulent house is the main body of a large farm, the use of which (dedicated to the manure heap) must be imagined in place of the current bus stop. The outbuildings, stables and stables, no doubt disappeared during the XIXe century with the industrial boom of the city. The house has also gained a floor and the appearance we see today.

The niche which overhangs the door would have formerly housed the statue of Saint Pierre, patron of Pierre Priscal, one of the owners of the house before the Revolution.

On both sides of the historic entrance, no. 66 now houses two shops, a florist and a beauty salon, a real estate agency and several apartments.
