Edinburgh to Glasgow Cycling Race: Highlights, Breakaways, and Leading Riders

Meanwhile, Krist Neiland, who was in the breakaway group for a large part of the distance, finished provisionally in 23rd position. Latvia was also represented by Emīls Liepiņš and Mārtiņš Pluto.

In the group ride, the cyclists covered 271.1 kilometers from Edinburgh to Glasgow. The first climb had to be overcome after 70 kilometers spent in the distance, and after 20 kilometers the hardest climb of the race had to be climbed. After another 40 kilometers, the athletes reached Glasgow, continuing through ten laps in Scotland’s largest city with many hills and turns.

Neyland was active immediately after the start and also in the first ten kilometers, later forming a leading breakaway group with eight cyclists, which accumulated an eight-minute advantage over the closest followers. Of that group, Neiland has the most career wins to date.

Approaching the heaviest climb of the day, the ride was stopped for less than an hour, with protesters blocking the road. The competition was resumed and the cyclists returned to the groups on the track, as they were at the time of the suspension. By the time Glasgow was reached, the leading nine had a lead of around five minutes.

Around half way through the streets of Glasgow the leading group began to split and with 74 kilometers to go the breakaways were caught up before the peloton took over. In the continuation, several breakaway attempts began and in one of them the Italian Alberto Bettiol left, who was later followed by the Belgian Wout van Aart, the Dane Mads Pedersen, the Slovenian Tadej Pogačar and the Dutch Mathieu van der Pool, while three more cyclists rode behind them – Skujiņš, the American Neilson Paules and Swiss Mauro Schmid.
