The proposal was made on Tuesday night during the ordinary session of the body and was accompanied by all the councilors. It will be on August 20 on the esplanade of the Legislative building.
The mayor (s) Maia González (National Party), during the previous half hour made the announcement that on Friday, August 20 there will be a blood and plasma donation day on the esplanade of the Departmental Board, during which mayors and Legislative officials.
He said that the work carried out by the Maldonado Regional Hemocenter is widely proven, and that it is “recognized nationally and abroad for its high quality standards”, which has transformed it into a reference center in recent years.
He remarked that 25,000 extractions are carried out per year, going from supplying the region (Maldonado, Rocha, Lavalleja, Cerro Largo and Treinta y Tres) to being a fundamental pillar in the country, collaborating with 25% of the blood required, for that the country is traveled with the Hemobus “in search of donors.”
In addition, he added that, “in times of pandemic, where solidarity is important, they are present in the collection of plasma from people who already had Covid-19 and are recovered to supply those with the disease”, another widely recognized action.
During the announcement, Maia González showed a video in which the technical director of the Maldonado Regional Hemocenter, Jorge Curbelo, greeted the members of the body and highlighted the importance of promoting a donation day like the one scheduled for August 20.
He said that “it is an example at the national level, since it is the first Departmental Board that will carry out a move of this type, making a huge demonstration of solidarity to donate platelets or plasma for those who need it”, and that he hopes it will be repeated in the rest of the departments.
Maia González recalled that among the agreements that the Maldonado Regional Hemocenter maintains, is the one signed with the Maldonado Municipality. “It is enough to attend to donate blood to be exempted from the payment of the driver’s license,” he stressed, adding that in 2019 3,000 licenses were delivered.
Finally, he reviewed some details regarding those who have the possibility of being donors and highlighted the importance of this act because “to donate blood is to donate life. Donors can help polytraumatized patients with leukemia, in surgery, among others ”.
Finally, he invited all members of the Legislature, councilors and officials, as well as others from the region, to participate in the donation day on August 20, when the Hemobus and the Mobile Apheresis Unit are installed on the esplanade of the Departmental Board from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
