Tired of all the plastic waste that piles up during the preparations for Friday’s taco dinner?
In 2028, there may be an end to that, Danish researchers are to be believed.
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is leading a research project with the aim of edible packaging, DTU writes in a press release.
An innovative new packaging should look like plastic, protect the food, and also be able to be fried – together with the contents.
The Innovation Fund in Denmark is said to have injected over ten million Danish kroner into the project.
Food products such as portion bags with rice, frozen pizza and minced meat are to be tested first, and the idea is that the packaging should be able to go straight into the frying pan, the oven or the kettle.
According to DTU, the edible packaging must be made from powder extracted from citrus and orange peel from the juice industry.
The goal is that it should keep the food just as fresh and safe, not change the appearance and taste of the food negatively, and at the same time be able to “disappear” during preparation.
And should it not be tempting to enjoy the packaging around the mincemeat together with the mincemeat, project manager Susan Løvstad Holdt says that the packaging should be able to be safely thrown in the compost pile at home.
According to the university, the edible food packaging is estimated to be able to save Denmark from a C02 emission from the import and disposal of plastic equivalent to 5,400 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
