Long-term Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics took the oath of office as the country’s president on Saturday, officially taking up this position for the next four years.
It is reported by “European truth“.
Rinkevics’ inauguration ceremony took place during the solemn session of the Latvian Saeima.
“I swear that all my activities will be dedicated to the welfare of the people of Latvia. I will do everything in my power to promote the well-being of the Latvian state and its population. I will honor sacred and observe the Constitution (Constitution. – Ed.) of Latvia and the laws of the state . In relation to everyone, I will be fair and I will fulfill my duties in good conscience,” he announced the oath.
After that, the long-term head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry signed a document with the text of the oath, which marked his assumption of the presidency of Latvia.
In his inaugural speech, Rinkevics promised that he would stand for “a modern and strong Latvia, for a just and fair Latvia, for the welfare of the people, for an inclusive and respectful society.”
Rinkevics became the seventh President of Latvia, elected after the restoration of state independence in 1990. Before that, he headed the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for almost 12 years.
Note that Edgars Rinkevics will become the first openly gay president not only in Latvia, but also in the European Union.
