Edgar Fuentes wins silver in javelin throw at Paris 2024

Para athlete Édgar Fuentes added another medal for Mexico at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after winning the silver medal in the F54 javelin throw final on Friday.

In the competition held at the Stade de France, the tricolor took second place on the podium with a record of 30.53 meters, his best mark of the season.

The gold medal went to Ivan Revenko, a member of the Neutral Paralympic Athletes team, with 30.77 metres, and the bronze went to Greek Manolis Stefanoudakis, with 30.13 metres.

During the competition, the Chihuahua native, who arrived in Sonora at a very young age, had four of his six attempts disallowed, so he filed a protest, but it was not processed. However, he managed to get the 13th medal for the tricolor delegation, and the fifth silver medal so far.

“We are very happy with the result. We wanted to take home a gold medal, but I think we far exceeded expectations for the event. We grew for the better, we improved our mark and we are very happy,” said the thrower, who won the gold medal at the 2024 Kobe World Championships, where he had a mark of 30.25 meters, setting a record for the event.

“I think it is every athlete’s dream to win a medal in these important events that make a high-performance athlete, and we are going for the gold in Los Angeles 2028. I am already a Parapan American champion (Santiago 2023), a world champion, and now a Paralympic runner-up, but I am looking forward to bringing home a gold medal at the next Games,” he added.

On the track, wheelchair sprinters Salvador Hernández, with a time of 17.55 seconds, and Leonardo Pérez, with 17.67 seconds, finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the 100-meter T52 final.

Meanwhile, Luis Carlos López, who made his Paralympic debut, finished in sixth place in the F37 discus throw final, thanks to a record of 50.31 metres, his personal best.
