Edelmira ‘Edel’ Segovia: Helps overcome challenges

The advantage of ‘Edel’ as a child was that she had studied English in a nun’s school in her native Lima and that knowledge made it easier for her to adapt to a country that was not her own. She claims that studying Spanish at the University was what connected her to her roots.

He has been dedicated to sharing his vast knowledge with students of all races for over 22 years. For 5 years she has been the Director of the Hispanic Center and is Co-president of the Latin Alliance of Southeast North Carolina, both belonging to the UNC in Wilmington.

CAREER
She was recently selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the New Hanover Community Foundation, being the only Latina among the 13 members that comprise it.

‘Edel’ has great expectations with this new project, managing to raise an important patrimonial fund which will be used in various community areas such as health, education and public safety, among others.

Additionally, she is co-founder of the Latin American Business Council of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.

WITH HISPANIC
The Hispanic Center at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington serves more than 1,000 Hispanic / Latino students through mentoring programs, cultural events, and community collaboration.

As director, Segovia’s main objective is the formation of new Latino leaders and during her long career dedicated to teaching and educational empowerment of numerous students, she has seen them become important professionals within the Wilmington resident community.

“My dentist was my student and another of my students just graduated as a doctor,” he said. “My personal and professional goal is to help them overcome challenges and open doors to progress, particularly to underserved communities.”

MORE ACTIVITIES

Segovia has been a Spanish teacher, Coordinator of Education Programs for the migrant population and currently serves as Administrator of Diversity and Inclusion.

Simultaneously, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on various topics, including English as a Second Language, ‘The Influence of Latino Immigration in the USA’, Diversity and Social Work, among others.

She has been an invited lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages, Literature, and Communication Studies and has contributed study abroad programs for the Office of International Programs.
