Edeka: Money trick at the checkout – it drives customers crazy

Waiting at the back of the checkout line for a few items can cost Edeka and Co. customers a lot of time and nerves. Especially when the people in front of you grab their last change to pay and thus hold up traffic even more.

That’s why self-scanning checkouts were introduced in supermarkets and drugstores, among other things. However, Edeka customers have apparently recognized a money-saving trick with some of these cash registers – much to the company’s displeasure.

Edeka: Trick at the checkout causes displeasure

On Reddit, a user posted a supposed sign from an Edeka branch. “Dear customers, we would like to ask you not to use the self-scan checkout as a coin changing machine,” said the Edeka employees.

It is not entirely clear whether and where this sign actually exists. But if you believe the comments, some Edeka customers actually seem to already know the trick and have already used it. “There are also self-service checkouts where you can pay with cash. And people just throw all their 1, 2 and 5 cent coins in there,” explains a Reddit user. Customers pay for their purchases, get rid of change and even get notes back as remaining money. The bank charges a fee for this.

THAT could happen

Some users therefore feel motivated by the sign to try out the additional “service” for the first time. “Good idea, I never thought of that” or “Then I don’t have to go to the cash register with my coins, I can let a machine count them,” they say. But that would be exactly the opposite effect that Edeka wants to achieve with the appeal.

A Reddit member claims to have worked at a company where the system was used. He explains what complications could arise: “The problem is that when Udo throws his jute bag with change into the machine, it can’t keep up with the counting and either throws everything out or just has a malfunction. In the event of a malfunction, the machine must at least be restarted.”
