The market with a Sales area of 2,500 square meters sets in all areas forward-looking and sustainable concepts – be it the construction in wood with natural insulation materials, the photovoltaic system on the roof with battery storage and solar carports in the parking lot, the use of rainwater for the sanitary facilities, the green facades, the intelligent daylight control or the natural outdoor facilities. These and many other measures contribute to the fact that the CO2 emissions compared to conventional construction reduced by 50% – that corresponds to a total of 840 tonnes.

“The Future market in Nauen of EDEKA Minden-Hannover shows in the best possible way what added value cooperative action brings,” says Federal Minister of Construction Klara Geywitz. “Here, they thought outside the box and did not simply build another concrete supermarket on a sealed surface. The operators in Nauen planned the life cycle process in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way from the outset and are helping to reduce the carbon footprint by using environmentally friendly materials, renewable insulation materials and greening the roof and entrance. The building’s basic heating load is covered by the waste heat from the refrigeration units. To save water, rainwater is used for the toilets and outdoor taps. Around the market there is, among other things, an orchard, a barefoot path and a bee education stand. I hope that this extraordinary construction project and corporate commitment will become the standard in the future.”

sustainability has been one of EDEKA’s most important innovation drivers for years. This is also clearly reflected in the sustainable construction concepts that we implement in a variety of ways as part of the group. We want to continue to drive this topic forward and are pleased to be able to show politicians today how important the design of future-proof markets is to EDEKA,” says Claas Meineke, Director of Marketing and Sales at EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co KG.

“The EDEKA future market in Nauen is a Prime example of modern and sustainable construction“, explains Roland Gottlewski, Managing Director of Building/Construction Management and Technology at EDEKA Minden-Hannover. “The fact that this is also attracting interest from the federal government shows that we are on the right path here and that sustainability is rightly a central part of our corporate philosophy.”

“The city of Nauen has offered us the ideal framework to pool all our expertise in the field of sustainable construction at this location,” says Niklas Daser, Managing Director of Expansion at EDEKA Minden-Hannover. “Here we can test and develop sustainable standards that we can then use at other locations.”

“This is creating a market of opportunities that combines ecological responsibility, social integration and economic efficiency,” says Christian Dorfmann, an independent EDEKA merchant and owner of the EDEKA Future Market. “We attach great importance to ensuring that our customers can recognize the sustainable focus not only in the building, but also in our product range.”
