On August 31, 1996, Eddie Van Halen visited fellow guitarist Jason Becker at his home in California. Becker, one of Shrapnel Records’ best-known former guitarists, arguably most famous for playing alongside former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth in the early ’90s, had been diagnosed with Charcot’s disease in 1989. Van Halen wanted to show his love and support for the guitarist, and shoot a promotional video to raise awareness for the disease.
Two months after Van Halen passed away in 2020, Becker’s family uploaded a video of the encounter, showing the guitar hero gifting Becker with one of his new signature “Wolfgang” guitars, named after his then five-year-old son. The caption under the clip uploaded to YouTube states that the video “shows a side of Eddie Van Halen that goes far beyond his brilliant musicianship: a gentle, caring and generous personality, devoid of the trappings of stardom or rock stardom”.
Today, Jason Becker is selling his #69 Wolfgang guitar to raise money for his medical care, which costs more than $100,000 a year.
The sale of the guitar is organized by YouTuber Benny “The Neurotic Guitarist” Goodman, a close friend of Becker, who wants to get the highest possible price for the guitar without having to pay fees to a professional auction house. Goodman uploaded his own video on July 22, the date of Jason Becker’s 54th birthday, and he’d like genuinely interested buyers to contact him directly.
