New York (AP) – The British singer Ed Sheeran (32, “Bad Habits”) picked up the guitar in the copyright lawsuit against him in New York. Sheeran picked up the instrument during questioning by his attorney yesterday to explain to the jury how he writes songs. According to US media, he played and sang parts of his hit “Thinking Out Loud”, which is what the process is about.
The heirs of US musician Ed Townsend, who died in 2003, accuse Sheeran of at least partially copying his song “Thinking Out Loud” from the song “Let’s Get It On”, which Townsend had released with Marvin Gaye. Sheeran and his legal team argue that most pop songs are built around chord progressions that are freely available.
With his serenade in court, Sheeran reportedly wanted to make it clear that the fast way in which he writes songs – sometimes several in a day – leaves no room for thinking about and copying other songs at the same time.
