Ed Sheeran faces trial for alleged plagiarism of Marvin Gaye’s song

Last week the trial against Ed Sheeran began for alleged plagiarism of a topic of marvin gaye.

Ed Sheeran faces a new trial for allegedly plagiarizing Marvin Gaye’s song, Let’s Get It On. The complaint was filed in 2017 by the heirs of Ed Townsend, co-author of the song: they claim that the British artist copied some elements of the 1976 classic to use in his song Thinking Out Loud.

In this regard, the artist has denied such an accusation; he even played the guitar during the hearing to show what the creative process of developing his single went like. According to Peoplethe singer also noted that if he is found guilty in the case, he is likely to walk away from music.

“If that happens (to be found guilty), I’m done, I stop. I find it really insulting to dedicate my whole life to being a performer and composer and have someone diminish it,” he said.

If found guilty, Ed Sheeran he will have to pay a large sum of money for the plagiarism of the song and, as if that were not enough, his image would be seriously affected as an artist and composer.

It is not the first time that Sheeran has faced a complaint for alleged plagiarism

The singer won a trial in the United Kingdom in March last year for alleged copyright infringement on his song Shape of you.

In announcing the ruling, Judge Antony Zacaroli concluded that Sheeran “neither deliberately nor unknowingly” copied a phrase from Oh why in writing Shape of youthe best-selling song in the UK in 2017 and the most streamed on Spotify.

Legal proceedings against the singer-songwriter had begun in 2018, leading to a trial that lasted 11 days.

On Twitter, the singer wrote last year: “The coincidence is bound to happen. If 60,000 songs are posted on Spotify every day, that’s 22 million songs a year. There are only 12 notes available.”

But there are twelve members of the jury who will have to decide, under the supervision of judge Louis Stanton, 95, if the similarities between the two songs are the result of plagiarism or mere coincidence.
