Ed Sheeran Cleared of Plagiarizing Marvin Gaye’s Song

He was sued for plagiarizing a song by Marvin Gaye.

For ten days, the jury of the Manhattan federal court had to rule on this emblematic case of musical copyrights. He decided this Thursday and felt that the 32-year-old singer had created his song ” independently “his 2014 planetary hit « Thinking Out Loud » therefore not being a partial copy of the famous « Let’s Get It On » by the prince of soul Marvin Gaye, released in 1973.

Attending the hearings since April 24, Ed Sheeran defended himself from having plagiarized the title of Gaye. According to a journalist from theAFPas the decision was delivered, the star stood up, thanked the jury and gave her team a hug.

The consequences of the outcome of this trial were important: a verdict against the singer could have ” chill “ artists in musical creation, some musicologists and jurists have warned.

As a reminder, the plaintiffs were heirs of Ed Townsend, an American musician and producer who co-wrote the track. « Let’s Get It On » with Marvin Gaye. The civil party pointed “striking similarities and clear common elements” between this song and « Thinking Out Loud ».

This is the second lawsuit won in a year by Ed Sheeran: he also won a legal battle in April 2022 before the High Court in London which dismissed two musicians accusing him of having copied one of their works for his mega hit « Shape Of You ».
