“Ed Sheeran Acquitted of Plagiarism in New York: Performs Acoustic Set in Soho”

british singer Ed Sheeran was recorded singing a song in the New York neighborhood of El Soho, in the south of Manhattan, where the artist he was acquitted the day before by a jury of having partially plagiarized in his theme Thinking Out Loud the chord progression of the song Let’s get it onde Marvin Gaye.

“Can I sing a song before I go?“, the artist from the United Kingdom, climbed on top of a parked vehicle, is heard saying, before interpreting one of his songs accompanied by his guitar.

Sheeran had been denounced by the estate of Ed Townsend, co-author of the Marvin Gaye song, in a lawsuit dating back to 2017 and about which Sheeran went so far as to say that he would retire from music if the plaintiffs won the case.

During the two weeks that the trial lasted, Ed Sheeran took a guitar to interpret before the jury the song that was the subject of controversy, in a privileged acoustic performance with which he apparently managed to convince them that there had been no copy in the “chord progression“.

Walking out of court, Ed Sheeran read a written statement in which he proclaimed that he feels “just a guy with a guitar who loves to write music for people to enjoy”, adding: “I am not and I will never allow myself to be a piggy bank that anyone comes to shake“.

Sheeran is about to release his new album and start a US tour as part of his world tour. Mathematicsin which he avoided including a stop in New York.

It plans to offer twenty concerts in the United States and Canada between May 6 (Arlington, Texas) and September 23 (Inglewood, California), with two forays into Canada, on June 17 (Toronto) and September 2. (Vancouver) to promote his album.

The singer already won another similar trial in the United Kingdom in March last year for copyright violation in his song Shape of you.

On his Twitter account, the singer wrote last year: “The coincidence is bound to happen. If 60,000 songs are posted on Spotify every day, that’s 22 million songs a year. There are only 12 notes available.”
