Ed Sheeran acquitted in lawsuit over alleged plagiarism of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”

British singer Ed Sheeran has been acquitted of wrongdoing by a Manhattan District Court.

And this, in a lawsuit brought against him by the estate of Marvin Gaye for alleged plagiarism of the 1973 disc of the deceased “Let’s Get It On”.

So on May 3, 2023, U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton said a jury should decide whether the hitmaker is liable to the estate of Marvin Gaye and the heirs of the late producer Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the song with Gaye.

Ed Sheeran has denied any wrongdoing.

The artist even went so far as to say that he would walk away from music if the jury found him guilty.

The other defendants in the case were Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Atlantic Records through which the music was released.

On May 4, 2023, the jury found him not guilty.

He therefore did not plagiarize Marvin Gaye’s record in his international hit “Thinking Out Loud”.

Ed Sheeran will now escape the fate suffered by Robin Thicke and Pharrell William.

Fans will also be relieved to hear that the British megastar isn’t giving up on music anytime soon.
