The Sixth Sentencing Court of San Salvador sentenced Ecuadorians Francisco Darwin Rodríguez Chele and José Luis Mora Bailón to 13 years in prison for the crime of illicit trafficking to the detriment of public health.

Evidence presented at trial showed that the defendants were arrested on August 20, 2022, 480 nautical miles south of Punta Remedios, Acajutla, in Sonsonate, by members of the Naval Force. In the boat in which they were traveling, 1,350 kilos of cocaine were found hidden under the deck floor, valued at more than 33 million dollars.

During the public hearing, the defendants apologized to the Salvadoran State, explaining that they committed the crime out of economic need to support their families. They also stated that they did not know the people who offered them $15,000 if they handed over the drugs.
