Quito. Ecuadorian Vice President Verónica Abad filed a complaint against President Daniel Noboa before the Electoral Disputes Tribunal (TCE) for alleged gender-based political violence, amid the ongoing disputes between the two.
In the document, the vice president also accused Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, Vice Minister of Governance Esteban Torres and presidential advisor Diana Jácome.
Political gender violence is considered a very serious electoral violation, according to the Code of Democracy here and can be punished with a fine of 21 basic unified salaries or suspension of participation rights for two to four years.
Appearing recently before a legislative commission investigating irregularities in public administration during Noboa’s current term, Abad denied having received money from the campaign in the 2023 early elections for his personal benefit.
In that space, she insisted that she has been a victim of “political gender violence” and “political persecution” and stated that she will assume the presidency as mandated by the Constitution, when the current president requests leave if he finally runs to campaign for reelection in 2025.
Last week, Noboa arranged for the temporary transfer to Turkey of Vice President Abad, who is serving as ambassador to Israel.
The president, through Executive Decree 353, ordered the Foreign Ministry to transfer Abad, after that institution issued a statement, in which it urged Ecuadorians in Lebanon, Israel or Palestine to leave those countries.
The decree stated that Abad would continue to carry out his duties from Ankara until his return to Tel Aviv was arranged, adding that the change included his family.
The disagreements between the two main heads of the Ecuadorian Executive were evident from the election of the duo and then, on December 8, 2023, a few days after taking office, Noboa sent Abad to Tel Aviv as an ambassador and collaborator for peace.
