The Ecuadorian Prosecutor General’s Office is investigating the murder of Guayaquil prosecutor Cesar Suarez, who was in charge of organized crime cases in the province of Guayas and was investigating the recent takeover of a television studio, the country’s Prosecutor General Diana Salazar said in a statement published on the blog of the Ecuadorian prosecutor’s office on the social network X.
“In light of the murder of our colleague Cesar Suarez, prosecutor of the National Special Unit for Investigations of Transnational Organized Crime of UNIDO in Guayas… we are taking the first investigative steps on the scene in order to ensure, as in every case of violent death, that this crime will not go unpunished,” Salazar stated.
According to local media, Suarez was shot at by mercenaries while he was driving his car – at least nine holes were left in the car window. The Guayaquil prosecutor oversaw cases of corruption in the police and hospitals, and also led an investigation into the recent takeover of the local television studio TC Television.
“We must be clear that this terrible event sends a message about the work that the justice system is doing in Ecuador. We call on law enforcement to guarantee the safety of those of us who carry out our duties, and the Judicial Council to allow UNIDO hearings to be held remotely,” Salazar added, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased.
Unrest in Ecuador began after two gang leaders escaped from a Guayaquil prison in early January.
