Another 80 prisoners were injured during clashes at Penitenciaria del Litoral prison in Guayas province, he said.
“It is a pity that criminal groups are trying to turn prisons into a battlefield for power. I ask God to bless Ecuador so that we can avoid further human casualties,” Lasso said.
He also noted that the government has increased its military presence outside the facility. Lasso said he would send additional security forces and free up funds to avoid a repeat of similar riots.
Also, according to him, the state will help the families of the deceased and wounded prisoners.
