Ecuadorian died beaten along with his cousin in New York; Latino driver arrested – El Diario NY

Sergio Zamora Mendoza, driver of a rental car service, was arrested on suspicion of beating two Ecuadorian cousins, one of whom died after being taken to a hospital in Brooklyn (NYC).

Zamora Mendoza, 33, was accused of beating Carlos Guamán, 66, to death and leaving his cousin in critical condition at the end of a ride around 4 a.m. Thursday on W. 9th St. near Avenue T. in Gravesend, the NYPD said.

Surveillance video recovered by police showed Guamán and his 52-year-old cousin getting out of the back of the car allegedly driven by Mendoza, near the home of the juvenile victim, whose name has not been released.

The suspect fled and was captured the next day. Paramedics rushed both cousins ​​to Maimonides Medical Center, where the older cousin died. The youngest victim is in critical but stable condition and has been cooperating with police.

Mendoza, a resident of Sunset Park, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault in Brooklyn Criminal Court, reported Daily News. All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Police believe the victims took a rental vehicle from returned to the younger cousin’s house after a night of drinking and then argued with his driver.

The survivor’s ex-wife said these cousins ​​were like brothers. They emigrated to the United States from Ecuador many years ago.

In September, a 33-year-old Ecuadorian immigrant was shot to death during an alleged robbery outside a gas station near his home in Brooklyn (NYC).

Last month, an 82-year-old taxi driver was beaten during a fight with a customer over payment of the fare in Manhattan (NYC).

In another similar case, in July a 60-year-old taxi driver was kicked and punched by three women and two men on a street in Midtown Manhattan. At that time, the victim said that New York has a “horrible system” that promotes impunity and asked to send Mayor Eric Adams the video of his attack “so that he dies of shame.”

In December 2022, Luis Leonardo Saguay, a 49-year-old Ecuadorian father, was hit and killed several times while walking from a party to his daughter’s house in Corona, Queens (NYC).
